Review: Demon Hunts by C. E. Murphy

Pub. Date: June 1, 2010
Publisher: Luna
Paperback:416 Pages
Kindle/eReader: Yes
Review Copy: Received galley copy from publisher via NetGalley

Summary from Publisher

Seattle police detective Joanne Walker started the year out mostly dead, and she's ending it trying not to be consumed by evil. Literally.

She's proven she can handle the gods and the walking dead. But a cannibalistic serial killer? That's more than even she bargained for. What's worse, the brutal demon leaves no tracks. So, if Joanne is to stop its campaign of terror, she'll have to hunt it where it lives: the Lower World, a shamanistic plane of magic and spirits. Trouble is, Joanne's skills are no match for the dangers she's about to face-and her on-the-job training could prove fatal to the people she's sworn to protect....

This is my first entry in the Walker Paper series and I have to say, I really enjoyed this book. I had no investment with Joanne’s character since I was coming into the middle of a series which is typically something I don’t do. But Murphy did a great job, bringing in details of previous books and characters as needed so that I understood each scene fully and intrigued me enough to want to pick up the previous books.

Demon Hunts is written in first person and while it was a little slow-going in the beginning, Joanne was able to pull me into her story. Murphy’s style of writing creates a clear voice for any reader to follow. However, at times, the pace of the story threw. In areas, where I expected fast paced action it dragged a little and some scenes seemed to take forever to end. But overall I enjoyed the book.

Without giving away any spoilers, I will say that, Joanne’s reluctance to accept who and what she is, will reach a pivotal point in this book. Fans of this series will not be disappointed.

Review: Spiritual Seduction by Desiree Day

Summary from Back Cover

Widowed with two small children, Riley Tyson is devastated when her husband Bradley is murdered. She doesn’t miss his fiery temper and heartless philandering, though. In fact, now that he’s dead, their relationship is better than ever. Bradley’s spirit sneaks into her bedroom at night, tempting her with gentle, seductive caresses and showering her with the attention he never gave her in life. It seems too crazy to be true. Until he drags her unsuspecting soul into a world so evil even Lucifer won’t go near it. . . .

Enter Malik Davenport, Riley’s boss and longtime friend. At six foot seven, with smooth, almond-colored skin and vibrant blue eyes, Malik rarely goes unnoticed. An ancient warrior prince who specializes in slaying demons, he’s the only man who can save Riley’s life—and the only one whose passionate touch unleashes the sexy vixen inside her.

As Bradley’s ruthless spirit orchestrates a deadly power surge against the living, Malik and his team of paladins prepare for a war of the worlds that has been brewing for ages. If they win, Malik and Riley can be together forever, but if they lose, the fate of humanity hangs in the balance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let me start off by saying that I contacted Desiree Day and asked to review her latest book, Spiritual Seduction. I haven’t read her earlier work, but was truly interested in reading a paranormal romance novel by an African American author. Having said that, here is my review.
This book wasn’t for me. Like I stated before, I love a good paranormal story, but while reading Spiritual Seduction I realized this is more of a romance novel/erotica novel.  The paranormal part wasn't believable.
Spiritual Seduction is written in the third person. As a reader, I was able to see the thoughts and feelings of the main characters but it didn’t pull me “into” the story. The narration style  "told" the story of Riley and Malik and didn't allow me to experience it.
There were also lines like:
“That man is harder to catch than a straight man in San Francisco”
“This room looked like Aretha Franklyn was in it getting ready for an awards show before you cleaned it up”
“Hold on. I’m starting to feel like the last turkey wing at a Thanksgiving dinner"
“They all swarmed on me like I’d just lost my last penny playing the lottery.”
“Although their normal living quarters seemed as secure as a virgin’s chastity belt…”
This kind of dialogue is used by all of the main characters or used in a descriptive manner throughout the novel. I really would have liked more third person descriptive text than getting it from the characters. It made the characters less believable to me.
Day delivers with her erotica scenes. But the excessive use of certain words (rhymes with wussy and rock) were a turn off. There are certainly places in most any novel where they would fit. I was just disappointed that they were used in almost every sex scene between Riley and Malik.
The biggest issue for me was there was no world building. The reader is simply expected to believe that Demons and demon slayers existed. Period. You’re given the background of Malik’s heritage as a warrior prince, in a story he told to Riley. In my opinion, this is the weakest part of the novel. I wish more time were invested in world building more than just detailing background facts in conversations between the characters.
Fans of Day’s previous work, will probably disagree with my review.  But as I've always stressed - my reviews are my own opinion.
Book Series Sunday - The Riley Jensen Guardian Series by Keri Arthur
Book Series Sunday will be my weekly posting highlighting some of the amazing book series that I've come across over the last few years. I know there are hundreds out there, but these are my uber-ultra favorite.
Riley Jenson Guardian Series - by Keri Arthur
From Hardcover Edition
In this exciting debut, author Keri Arthur explodes onto the supernatural scene with a sexy, sensuous tale of intrigue and suspense set in a world where legends walk and the shady paths of the underworld are far more sinister than anyone envisioned.
A rare hybrid of vampire and werewolf, Riley Jenson and her twin brother, Rhoan, work for Melbourne’s Directorate of Other Races, an organization created to police the supernatural races–and protect humans from their depredations. While Rhoan is an exalted guardian, a.k.a. assassin, Riley is merely an office worker–until her brother goes missing on one of his missions. The timing couldn’t be worse. More werewolf than vampire, Riley is vulnerable to the moon heat, the weeklong period before the full moon, when her need to mate becomes all-consuming.…
Luckily Riley has two willing partners to satisfy her every need. But she will have to control her urges if she’s going to find her brother….Easier said than done as the city pulses with frenzied desire, and Riley is confronted with a very powerful–and delectably naked–vamp who raises her temperature like never before.
In matters carnal, Riley has met her match. But in matters criminal, she must follow her instincts not only to find her brother but to stop an unholy harvest. For someone is doing some shifty cloning in an attempt to produce the ultimate warrior–by tapping into the genome of nonhumans like Rhoan. Now Riley knows just how dangerous the world is for her kind–and just how much it needs her.
Moon Sworn (9) Release date May 25, 2010
In this series, Riley battles vampires, werewolves and all things that go bump in the night.  But this isn't your typical paranormal romance-spy series.  Arthur laces surprises with suduction with each book to keep readers hooked and asking for more.
The good/bad news is Moon Sworn is the last book in the series. Good, because I can't wait to see how things turn out for Riley -- she's been through so much.  Bad because, I don't really want her story to end.  But word has it, Arthur is working on a spin-off series for one of the characters in this series.  No spoiler's here - you'll have to read the series to find out "who" but ---I know it will be just as exciting!
So if you haven't picked up a Riley Jenson book yet, do it now.  You won't be disappointed!
Review: Angel's Blood by Nalini Singh
Description from Goodreads.com
Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux knows she's the best—but she doesn't know if she's good enough for this job. Hired by the dangerously beautiful Archangel Raphael, a being so lethal that no mortal wants his attention, only one thing is clear—failure is not an option...even if the task is impossible.
Because this time, it's not a wayward vamp she has to track. It's an archangel gone bad.
The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other…and pull her to the razor's edge of passion. Even if the hunt doesn't destroy her, succumbing to Raphael's seductive touch just may. For when archangels play, mortals break…
Published: March 3rd 2009 by Berkley
Details: Mass Market Paperback, 339 pages
Available on Kindle: Yes
I have to admit, the "tweets" of fellow book bloggers are what drew me to Angel’s Blood. I’ve seen this book in the local library and book stores, but the title nor cover image grabbed me. It didn’t touch that special place in my brain (or wallet) that says “READ THIS NOW!!!”……… I’m so glad I’m on Twitter!
In Angel’s Blood, Nalini Singh creates a world where Angels rule – literally. Archangels are the leaders of the winged race with lower caste angels scattered throughout the population. Vampires are “made” by the angels and are held in servitude for centuries through the contracts they sign as part of the deal for immortality. However even deals sealed in blood can have its own problems and sometimes vampires try to renege on their contracts. Enter Elena Deveraux, Vampire Hunter.
Elena is the best vampire hunter that has ever worked for The Guild, the worldwide organization dedicated to policing errant vampires and “others”. But Elena is hunter-born. Her ability to scent and hunt vampires is a part of who she is – which makes her the best. Unlike “hunt-and-stake” traditional vampire hunters, Elena’s job is to tag, bag and return runaway vampires back to their angel masters alive. After all, a deal is a deal.
But when Raphael, New York’s most dangerous Archangel is confronted with a problem that could tear down the wall of secrets that surrounds his race, he hire’s Elena.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! Singh creates a world that is both believable and fantastical. In this story – Angels aren’t the cute little cherubs with rosy cheeks, carrying bows and arrows. Here – they are blindingly beautiful and ancient in age. Power and control are all that matter to them. Be it with an iron fist or slick glaze of madness.
The chemistry between Elena and Raphael is fantastic. Raphael is the immovable object and Elena is the unstoppable force. Both characters are damaged emotionally, but the book is written in third person, so you’re able to see both points of view. There’s definitely sexual tension between Elena and Raphael, but it doesn’t become the all consuming focus of their relationship. Which I think is a good thing.
Angel’s Blood is fast paced and has a great flow from one scene to another. This is the first book of two currently published so I’m not giving away any spoilers – just know that the ending is so unexpected it will make you reach IMMEDIATELY for book two Archangel’s Kiss......... so you may want to have it handy!
Waiting On Wednesday - Cheat the Grave by Vicki Pettersson
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly Meme started by Breaking the Spine. It is a feature that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:
Cheat the Grave
The Fifth Sign of the Zodiac
by Vickie Pettersson
Release date:  May 25, 2010
Description from Goodreads
Las Vegas socialite and otherwordly avenger Joanna Archer gave up everything when she embraced mortality—abandoning her powers and altering her destiny to save a child . . . and a city. Now her former allies are her enemies—and her enemies have nothing to fear.
Yet still she is bound to a prophecy that condemns her to roam a nightmare landscape that ordinary humans cannot see and dare not enter. And a beast is on her trail—an insane killer blinded by bloodlust, who's determined to rip much more from Joanna than merely her now-fragile life. Survival is no longer an option in this dark realm where good and evil have blurred into confusing shades of gray—unless she can gather together an army of onetime foes and destroy everything she once believed in.
I stumbled onto this series last summer while scanning the paperbacks in my local library.  The first book in the series Scent of Shadows: The First Sign of the Zodiac had me hooked from the first chapter.  Before I was halfway through, I tried to order the next book with the library but found out there were 3 other people already waiting.  So yep, I went to the store and bought the rest of the series.
I can't wait to get my hands on this new release.  For those who can't wait (like me) Amazon is offering the Kindle version of Scent of Shadows for free with bonus material for Cheat the Grave included.
Review: The Flip Side of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Minion by L.A. Banks
 Summary from GoodReads.com
(I'm reposting this review from my old blog The Black Vampire Chronicles)
All Damali Richards ever wanted to do was create music and bring it to the people. Now she is a Spoken Word artist and the top act for Warriors of Light Records. But come nightfall, she hunts vampires and demons--predators that people tend to dismiss as myth or fantasy. But Damali and her Guardian team cannot afford such delusions, especially now, when a group of rogue vampires have been killing the artists of Warriors of Light and their rival, Blood Music. Strange attacks have also erupted within the club drug-trafficking network and drawn the attention of the police. These killings are a bit out of the ordinary, even for vampires. No neat puncture marks in the neck to show where the life's blood has been sucked from the body. These bodies have been mutilated beyond recognition, indicating a blood lust and thirst for destruction that surpasses any Damali has encountered before. Damali soon discovers that behind these brutal murders is the most powerful vampire she has ever met, and this seductive beast is coming for her next. But his unholy intentions have also drawn the focus of other hellish dark forces. Soon Damali finds herself being pulled deeper into the vast and horrifying vampire world.
 Minion by L. A. Banks is Book One of a thirteen book series written by L. A. Banks. I have to say, Minion was a tough read for me. Not because the content was "bad" but -- I'm a die-hard Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan and this book initially reeked of rip-off innuendo from that series. Buffy is a Vamp Slayer. Damali Richards is a Vampire Slayer. Buffy - One Slayer dies - another is "activated." Minion - Slayers are born - but Damali is a MILENIUM Slayer. (Yeah this dates the book a little but go with it). Buffy is trained by Watchers. Damali has a group of Guardians. So you can see the similarities are a bit irritating.
However Banks is able to take this similar "type" of storyline and urbanize it. Damali is a rising African American spoken-word performer and her Guardians are her band members. By day, they perform concerts all over country and by night they are a kick-ass, vamp slayer group hunting and killing vamps and demons in the traditional good against evil war. Minion takes it’s time setting up the background for the reader, explaining the history of the Neteru, (Vampire Slayer) weaving in tons of paranormal, astrologic, Judeo-Christian, pseudo-African and mystical mythology that can at times, leave your head spinning. But the relationships between Damali, her Guardians and love interests lends for a great backdrop.
So I guess you’re wondering why I’m talking about this book at this point right? Well for all the crammed details – and mind blurring “think deep” pockets of the book – Bank’s creates the perfect setting for her Vampire Huntress Legend series that makes you want to move on to Book 2, The Awakening. The urban-hip-hop style of writing can be hokey at times – but when you focus on the storyline, you can see the potential. As you continue through the series, you'll definitely get hooked.
