Review: Camileon by Shykia Bell
Camile Leon is a young woman searching for the hidden truth about her absentee father, a mysterious lost necklace, and the details of her early childhood-none of which she can remember. She persistently digs for the truth, but at each attempt, her mother dodges her questions and swiftly changes the subject. Before her mother is able to reveal the truth, something terrible happens, and Camile fears she will lose her mother forever. She also fears that the details regarding her past will remain unknown.
Just as Camile loses hope on learning the particulars about her past, she makes a shocking discovery which reveals her entire life has been a carefully constructed web of deceit. Almost simultaneously, she experiences strange occurrences that shred the fabric of her reality. She blames these incidents on her extreme stress and hyperactive imagination. As the lies continue to unravel, startling facts emerge-bringing terrible heartache, confusion, and despair.
Facing a powerful nemesis, Camile must find the strength within herself to discover the truth. Failing could bring deadly consequences. (Summary from back cover)
Camile Leon has lived her life searching for answers about her past. Her father disappeared from her life when she was young and years of her childhood are missing from her memories. Her mother has always been closed mouth about both her father and her lost childhood and Camile has never been able to get much out of her. When she finally presses her mother for answers, her mother falls suddenly ill and Camile begins to wonder if her push for answers was the cause.
Shortly after her mother falls ill, Camile discovers a long lost necklace in her mother’s possessions and clues about her past begin to unlock her memories. Camile begins to doubt her sanity and events unfold leading her to the answers she’s been searching for all of her life.
Camileon is the debut novel of author, Shykia Bell. I discovered this book through a friend of mine and fellow book blogger, Reads For Pleasure several weeks ago. She tweeted about receiving a Sci-fi book from a new author and asked if I had heard anything about it since she didn’t read much Sci-Fi. My response was no, but my interest was immediately piqued! It’s always refreshing to find a new African American author writing in fiction in the Urban Fantasy genres and Ms. Bell doesn’t disappoint.
She’s created an original story with a perspective that I found refreshing. Camileon is written in third person POV and there were a few scenes that created the feeling of being told what was going on rather than experiencing the moment by reading it. But it wasn’t too much of a distraction for me to continue to reading.
If you’re looking for a unique storyline from an up and coming author, I recommend Shykia Bell’s Camileon. As usual, I don’t like giving away spoilers in my reviews but I will say that Ms. Bell is currently working on the next installment of the Camileon saga and I’m looking forward to it’s release.
Paperback: 240 pages
Publisher: iUniverse (July 10, 2008)

Book Series Sunday - Cassandra Palmer Series by Karen Chance
Book Series Sunday will be my weekly posting highlighting some of the amazing book series that I've come across over the last few years. I know there are hundreds out there, but these are my uber-ultra favorite.
Cassandra Palmer can see the future and communicate with spirits;talents that make her attractive to the dead and the undead. The ghosts of the dead aren't usually dangerous; they just like to talk; a lot. The undead are another matter.
Like any sensible girl, Cassie tries to avoid vampires. But when the bloodsucking Mafioso she escaped three years ago finds Cassie again with vengeance on his mind, she's forced to turn to the vampire Senate for protection. The undead senators won't help her for nothing, and Cassie finds herself working with one of their most powerful members, a dangerously seductive master vampire—and the price he demands may be more than Cassie is willing to pay.
Summary from back cover
First, let me say don't judge a series by the first book! When I first picked up this series - I started with the second book, Claimed by Shadow and I really, really liked it. I didn't do it on purpose - I was just so enthralled by the summary I had to read it. However after seeing the reviews for the first book I was confused. How could the second book be so much better than the first? After reading Touch the Dark, it gave me important answers that I was missing and I could understand some of the other reader's comments. BUT - I still liked the first book. Either way, the good news is - after the first book, the series gets much better.
Chance is a great writer and even though this is a series, each book has a true ending -- so you're not left hanging on pins and needles waiting for the next book. Sometimes, that's refreshing in a series.
So take a chance on the Cassandra Palmer series (sorry I couldn't resist) - you won't regret it.

Review: Archangel's Kiss by Nalini Singh
Summary from back cover
Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux wakes from a year-long coma to find herself changed—an angel with wings the colors of midnight and dawn—but her fragile body needs time to heal before she can take flight. Her lover, the stunningly dangerous archangel Raphael, is used to being in control—even when it comes to the woman he considers his own. But Elena has never done well with authority…
They’ve barely begun to understand each other when Raphael receives an invitation to a ball from the archangel Lijuan. To refuse would be a sign of fatal weakness, so Raphael must ready Elena for the flight to Beijing—and to the nightmare that awaits them there. Ancient and without conscience, Lijuan holds a power that lies with the dead. And she has organized the most perfect and most vicious of welcomes for Elena…
"They didn't understand that she held his heart, held it so utterly that there was nothing he wouldn't do, no line he wouldn't cross to keep her safe." excerpt from Archangel's Kiss
With a line like that -- who wouldn't -- who couldn't fall in love with the Archangel of New York, Raphael?
Archangel's Kiss is book two of Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series and it picks up one year later after the end of Angel's Blood. Elena awakens from a year long coman to discover she has wings. Yes - wings. Her lover, Raphael transformed her into an angel. Something that hasn't been done in over half a millenia.
Elena must deal with the gifts and weaknesses of the life of a newly born angel. As a human she understood her limits - as a newborn angel she was weak and vulnerable. In contrast, Raphael's continued exposure to Elena, makes him more an more human - slowly chipping away his "inhuman" nature to uncover feelings that have taken root into his soul.
Singh has done a great job with exposing the vulnerabilities of Elena and Raphael and thier relationship. While you don't see much of the Guild in this book - you gain more information about the angels, Raphael's history and how and why he became the stoic member of the Archangels. We're introduced to more members of The Seven which will hopefully lead to more spin-off novels for the series. The vampire Dmitri and Angel Illium would be very well received with their own storylines.
If you're into urban fantasy and looking for something fresh and new - you can't go wrong with a sexy-heartstopping-Archangel from New York!
