Review: Unholy Magic by Stacia Kane

ENEMIES DON’T NEED TO BE ALIVE TO BE DEADLY.

For Chess Putnam, finding herself near-fatally poisoned by a con psychic and then stopping a murderous ghost is just another day on the job. As an agent of the Church of Real Truth, Chess must expose those looking to profit from the world’s unpleasant little poltergeist problem—humans filing false claims of hauntings—all while staving off any undead who really are looking for a kill. But Chess has been extra busy these days, coping with a new “celebrity” assignment while trying on her own time to help some desperate prostitutes.

Someone’s taking out the hookers of Downside in the most gruesome way, and Chess is sure the rumors that it’s the work of a ghost are way off base. But proving herself right means walking in the path of a maniac, not to mention standing between the two men in her life just as they—along with their ruthless employers—are moving closer to a catastrophic showdown. Someone is dealing in murder, sex, and the supernatural, and once again Chess finds herself right in the crossfire.

Unholy Magic is book 2 of Stacia Kane's Downside Series featuring Churchwitch, Debunker and functional drug addict Chess Putnam. Kane continues to spin a gritty and dank post-apocolyptic world (via physco poltergiests) that keeps readers engaged and entertained.  Each character is exposed layer by layer with Kane's writing -- their strength's and weaknesses alike.  If you loved Chess in Unholy Ghosts, you'll find more things to love in Book 2.

Here's an exerpt from Unholy Magic:
"You ain’t know nothing,” a man scoffed. “How I’m supposed to trust some junkie Churchwitch-”

The words sliced through her like razor-sharp fangs. Her face flooded with shame, so hot she imagined it steamed in the icy air. At least it wasn’t difficult to identify the speaker. All she had to do was look for the man with Terrible’s fist locked around his neck.

“Ain’t think I hear you right,” Terrible said in a calm, quiet voice. “Wanna louden up?” The man shook his head His eyes bulged. He looked like a bug, with his hands clenching into tiny useless fists. “You sure? You got else to say, you best say it now, instead of later. Now we got us watchers. Later might not be true, dig?” The man dug."
:::Clutching my pearls:::: Who wouldn't want a "Terrible" to come to your rescue?

So if you haven't started this series....what are you waiting for? If you want something fresh and new and totally unexpected -- head to the Downside - this series is definitely worth starting.

One Book Pimp To Rule Them All....Book Pimps - Who They Are and Why We Love Them - Day Five

Welcome to the final posting for Book Pimps - Who They Are and Why We Love Them.  It's certainly been a full week. I've had the pleasure of introducing you to my personal Book Pimps, Marquetta from Love To Read for Fun, Bells from Hanging With Bells, KC from Smokin' Hot Books and Penny from Penny Pimpin'.  I hope you've enjoyed all that they had to say and share with fellow bloggers and readers alike.  You can never have too many Book Pimps - you're wallet might complain.... but you'll never run out of anything to read :)

So now, I'm going to have my Pimps introduce my last and final Book Pimp:

She feeds my book addiction and hand to god I spend at least an extra $20-$50 a month on books because of her reviews.~ KC from Smokin' Hot Books

My number one, una suprema, book pimp is Smexybooks! from Bells ~ Hangin With Bells
Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Book Pimp of ALL Book Pimps, The One Pimp to Rule them All..... is Mandi from Smexy Books Romance Reviews. I, like most of Mandi's followers, stalk her tweets -- follow her reviews and pretty much just read whatever she says.  Why- because she's that good. Between her reviews, contests and interviews

Tell us a little about yourself:

Hi! I’m Mandi and write the blog, Smexy Books. My review partner Tori and I read and review anything in the romance and urban fantasy genres. When I discover a good book, a really, really good book - the kind that gives yous jitters after reading it - I love to force suggest others should read it as well. And although I find myself throwing books at readers often, I have been on the receiving end, and found some amazing books through others pimping skills.

Who are your top 3 Book Pimps and what do they pimp to you? :

1. The Book Smugglers: I still to this day remember reading their review of Revealed by Kate Noble and thinking, wow, that book sounds like the perfect book for me. So when I finally got around to reading it and fell in love with Marcus, my beloved beta hero, I really had to them credit. They not only pimped that one to me, but many others as well. My review can be found here.

2. My friend and neighbor Bridget - So, Bridget does not have a blog, but I have to give her all the credit for pimping out The Gardella Vampire Chronicle series by Colleen Gleason to me. I started the first book (of the five book series) The Rest Falls Away long ago, and couldn’t get into it. Fast forward a year or two, and Bridget calls me up and said I must read the aforementioned book - she is in love with it. After a big sigh I said, sure sure. But didn’t do it. But she didn’t give up - A true sign of a fabulous book pimp!! She force fed me wine until I agreed to read it. So I did - and by the end thought wow, this was a pretty good book. Together we read the remaining four books and we literally cried together when we finished book five. Not only is it an amazing series and one of my favorites, but it was so much fun reading them together. Is it good to have a book pimp as a next door neighbor - yes it is.

3. For my final pimpster extraordinaire - I must talk about the Downside series by Stacia Kane. To get me to read this three book series was a group effort - let me explain. Tori and Sophia read the first in the series, Unholy Ghosts and the pimping started. Then they read Unholy Magic and I was blinded by their pimping. Five star ratings started popping up everywhere and they started YELLING AT ME WITH CAPITAL LETTERS on Twitter to read the first two books. OKAY, OKAY!! I said. So I loaded up my Kindle and went to the beach. Of course they were right - and I read Unholy Magic with my mouth hanging open (wipes drool) and was literally stunned at the journey my emotions went on.

Book three, City of Ghosts finally came out but I had some things pop up in real life (darn real life) and couldn’t get to the book when it first came out. Then I became behind on my blog, so City of Ghosts got pushed even further down the pile. It wasn’t until I recently announced on Twitter I had yet to read it that the actual full frontal assault started. Bells was hitting me from all sides - Twitter, Goodreads, emails. I was pretty sure Julie would hunt me down from Canada. I was nervous SpazP (aka Pamela) would live up to her name and give me a spaz attack! I was nervous y’all!! A massive pimp mob was forming and they were out to get me. So I read it - and damn it - my pimpers were right of course. City of Ghosts, along with the other two books in the series are my favorite books of 2010. My girls gave me that extra push I needed and I love them for it.

It is the best thing in the world, when you read a book and you know you cannot rest until everyone you know has read it as well. I love to dish it out, but I love to be on the receiving end of it as well. So put on your pimping gear, polish up that book bling, and go make someone read a book.

Now that's the sign of a true Book Pimp.  Not only does she serve her customers up with smexy books -- but she has her *own* suppliers.  What?? Oh and to prove just how fantabulous Mandi truly is -- Smexy Books just won the Best Romance Book Blogger Award for Book Blogger Appreciation Week 2010! BOOM!! If Mandi says read it?  Guess what.....you better get your read on!!

Mandi - in honor of Book Pimp Appreciation Week, I'm pleased to award you with your own official Pimp Cup:

Book Pimps - Who They Are and Why We Love Them - Day Four

Can I just say this week of Book Pimps - Who They Are and Why We Love Them has just been AWESOME with a capital A? I've shared my nearest and dearest with the world and hopefully added to your own book addiction.  I need to create a slogan -- Book Pimpin' it's not a Fad it's a Lifestyle!
Today, I'm introducing Penny from Penny Pimpin'. But I have to tell you. I didn't meet Penny on Twittah and her blog is barely one month old.  So how did I meet her? Well, she "found" me at the book signing for Jeaniene Frost at Borders Bookstore in August.  She came up to me and said "Are you Dren from Dren's B-Spot?" I paused for a second thinking "STALKER?" but said yes. She then explained how she's been following my tweets with Bells and Marq and KC and she loves us!  After hearing that I knew Penny was a keeper :)

So Penny, tell us a little about yourself:

My blog Penny Pimpin is brand new; I’ve only done a couple of posts so far. Right now, its about books, tv and music but books will be the main focus. One of my favorite things on earth to do is to introduce someone to a book or show that I like so I’ll have someone else to discuss it with and that’s the purpose of my blog. I have been on a UF and PNR kick for a couple of years now and the bulk of the books I’ve read have been in those genres but I’m also a fan of romantic suspense, medical /forensic mysteries/thrillers, epic fantasy and science fiction. My blog will eventually touch on books from all of those genres. I haven’t started reviewing yet but its coming.

Who are your top 3 Book Pimps?:

My top three book pimps are my sister Melinda and two of my best friends, Chena and Mica. Unfortunately, none of them currently have book blogs BUT I’m working on them all and hope to have them do guest posts on my blog. The three of them have been entirely responsible for my interest in epic fantasy series, such as Melanie Rawn’s Dragon trilogies (Dragon Prince & Dragon Star), George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, which is the basis of the upcoming HBO series A Game of Thrones and the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, which inspired the Legend of the Seeker TV series.

I also have to give an honorable mention to Twitter for its book pimpiness (my word; feel free to use it as your own!) too. Since I joined Twitter and became acquainted with such lovely ladies such as yourself Dren, and Bells of Hangin with Bells, and KC of SmokinHotBooks and Mandi and Tori of Smexy Books and the lovely ladies of ROOB (Realms on Our Bookshelves), I have been exposed to new-to-me authors and genres and I have LOVED it! My wallet, however, has been protesting quite loudly!

Name the top three books that were Pimped to you that you absolutely loved and why:

1) Dragon Prince – Melanie Rawn - This series came out in the late 80’s and was the first fantasy book I ever read. My sister Melinda introduced me to this series and it opened my eyes to a whole new world of books. Prior to reading it, I was mainly a mysteries, thrillers and romance reader. I haven’t looked back since!

2) Magic Bites – Ilona Andrews - This one also came to me from my sister Melinda. I have a special place in my heart for shapeshifters and the Magic series is full of ‘em! Curran and Raphael…..HOW YOU DOIN?!?!

3) Darkfever – Karen Marie Moning - This one is straight from you, Pimpstress Dren! You even went as far as to GIVE me the first book to get me hooked….AND IT WORKED! I know that Barrons is the favorite of most…but I have to admit to being RATHER intrigued by V’Lane. I’m just sayin!

WOOT!! Gotta love that V'Lane!!! (brushing my shoulders off).  But folks, let me be clear. Even though Penny is new to Twittah and Book Bloggin - she most CERTAINLY has the Pimpin skills.  How do I know? I know cause this pimp pimped books IN. MY. FACE. Yeah that's right. At the book signing, Penny stood in the middle of a bookstore and fed my addiction - real time.  I nearly freaked because I didn't have a pen and paper so I logged all the stuff she pimped into my Blackberry -- author, Sherylin Kennon, titles like Let the Right One In... she was rollin them out I was typing them in.  Oh and Penny is a TOTAL badass - she just completed her very first Triathlon last week. WHAT?!! And she even convinced me to do it with her next year and I said "yes" O_0 .  Come on folks, how can you say no to a .....
