Book Series Sunday: The Black Sun's Daughter Series by M.L. N. Hanover

I'm back!!  A loooooooong time ago I started "sporadically" at best a my own Sunday meme called Book Series Sunday. It's a day where I spotlight a favorite series of mine be it old or new. I'm happy to say, I'm back on track and raring to go! So without further adeu, check out what I've picked for this week!

The Black Sun's Daughter
by M. L. N. Hanover

Jayné Heller thinks of herself as a realist, until she discovers reality isn’t quite what she thought it was. When her uncle Eric is murdered, Jayné travels to Denver to settle his estate, only to learn that it’s all hers — and vaster than she ever imagined. And along with properties across the world and an inexhaustible fortune, Eric left her a legacy of a different kind: his unfinished business with a cabal of wizards known as the Invisible College.
Led by the ruthless Randolph Coin, the Invisible College harnesses demon spirits for their own ends of power and domination. Jayné finds it difficult to believe magic and demons can even exist, let alone be responsible for the death of her uncle. But Coin sees Eric’s heir as a threat to be eliminated by any means — magical or mundane — so Jayné had better start believing in something to save her own life.

When Jayné Heller’s uncle Eric died, she inherited a fortune beyond all her expectations — and a dangerous mission in a world she never knew existed. Reining in demons and supernatural foes is a formidable task, but thankfully Jayné has vast resources and loyal allies to rely on. She’ll need both to tackle a bodyswitching serial killer who’s taken up residence in New Orleans, a city rich in voodoo lore and dark magic.

Working alongside Karen Black, a highly confident and enigmatic ex-FBI agent, Jayné races to track down the demon’s next intended host. But the closer she gets, the more convinced she becomes that nothing in this beautiful, wounded city is exactly as it seems. When shocking secrets come to light, and jealousy and betrayal turn trusted friends into adversaries, Jayné will soon come face-to-face with an enemy that knows her all too well, and won’t rest until it has destroyed everything she loves most….

For the first time in forever, Jayné Heller’s life is making sense. Even if she routinely risks her life to destroy demonic parasites that prey on mortals, she now has friends, colleagues, a trusted lover, and newfound confidence in the mission she inherited from her wealthy, mysterious uncle. Her next job might just rob her of all of them. At Grace Memorial Hospital in Chicago, something is stirring. Patients are going AWOL and research subjects share the same sinister dreams. Half a century ago, something was buried under Grace in a terrible ritual, and it’s straining to be free. Jayné is primed to take on whatever’s about to be let loose. Yet the greatest danger now may not be the huge, unseen force lurking below, but the evil that has been hiding in plain sight all along—taking her ever closer to losing her body, her mind, and her soul. . . .
If you're a fan of Urban Fantasy, The Black Sun's Daughter Series by M. L. Hanover is a series you don't want to miss.  Hanover creates a world where the paranormal species like Vamps and werewolves are really "Riders" demons from hell that possess humans and wreak havoc all over the world.

Jayne Heller (pronounced Zah-nay) is a newbie who is thrust into the supernatural world after the death of her favorite uncle.  Book 1, Unclean Spirits takes readers on the road of discovery along with Jayne as she learns what about her uncle's past and her new future.

I will be brutally honest - Book 1 is "okay." Here's my original review that I posted on my first blog: The Black Vampire Chronicles. I only gave it 2 stars.  So now I know you're wondering - WHAT THE HELL, DREN? How can this series really be worthy of it's own friggin series post if you gave the first book TWO STARS??

*deep breath* My answer .... Because Book Two TOTALLY KICKS ASS!! And Book 3 makes you want re-read it -- again, just because!  Admittedly, it was at least a year before I picked up Darker Angels because I was irritated with the issues in the first book. But oh I'm so glad I did! I can happily say Jayne is a kick-ass lead character with just as many flaws and strengths as the evil riders that she and her hang hunts down to destroy.

So if you're looking for something new to dig into -- I recommend The Black Sun's Daughter Series.  Book One may be a little dragging but is sooooo worth it. You'll have all the info you need to jump into book two and three!

KLB Virtual Events Book Blog Tour: Eternal Rider - by Larissa Ione

I have the fantabulous pleasure of being stop # 4 on the Virtual Journey hosted by KLB Virtual Events for Eternal Rider by Larissa Ione. Check out my review below!

His name is Ares, and the fate of mankind rests on his powerful shoulders. If he falls to the forces of evil, the world falls too. As one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, he is far stronger than any mortal, but even he cannot fight his destiny forever. Not when his own brother plots against him.

Yet there is one last hope. Gifted in a way other humans can't-or won't-understand, Cara Thornhart is the key to both this Horseman's safety and his doom. But involving Cara will prove treacherous, even beyond the maddening, dangerous desire that seizes them the moment they meet. For staving off eternal darkness could have a staggering cost: Cara's life.

Favorite Quote - Ares:

"You were right, Cara. I'm a demon. All I've known my entire life is fighting. Battle, sex, it's all the same to me. I fuck like I fight, until the other person is beggin for mercy."

How can I describe how I felt when I finished reading Eternal Rider, Lords of Deliverance Book 1 by Larissa Ione?  I think Jack Vettriano's painting "The Letter" nails it.  As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.......
Yeah, it was totally like that. (just replace the "letter" with Chessiebomb - my K3). I needed a cigarette....yet I don't smoke.

Once again, Larissa Ione knocks it out the park with her new Lords of Deliverance Series featuring the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse. Eternal Rider is Book 1 and features the story of Ares.

I'm already a huge fan of Ione's Demonica Series, so when the lovely ladies of KLB Virtual Events asked if I was interested in participating on the Book Blog Tour, I literally jumped through my laptop with my acceptance! I received the book a few days later and started reading it late Sunday evening.  The next day was I was miffed that I had to go to work and couldn't keep reading -- sooooooo.....I downloaded it to Chessiebomb, connected my earbuds and proceeded to *cough* work *cough* while Eternal Rider streamed via Text-To-Speech into my lovely little ears.

Eargasims anyone? Yeah... it's THAT good!

Ione does a lot of world building in the first initial chapters of the book, but for me it didn't distract from the story. I already had a solid handle on the basics from the Demonica series, so LOD details fell smoothly into place for me. While you don't have to read the Demonica series to be able to dive into Eternal Rider - I highly recommend that you do. Aside from the fact that they're great books (all 5), you'll have a clear handle on where the LOD series will fit in overall. *Special Note for Demonica Fans* There are cameos of all the main characters from Demonica in Eternal Rider so you can get your fix on Doc E and Wraith. But I digress...

Let's talk about Ares.

*insert a moment of silence here*

...... Ok... Ares. Kicks. Ass. Period. Why? ....Um because he's War -- without the evil -- for now. (see favorite quote above).  He doesn't love. He doesn't cherish. He was raised to believe love is weakness and with his brother Reseph aka Pestilence gunning for him he can't take any chances. Circumstances occur where he's forced to offer protection for a human woman who in the end turns out to hold the key to his destruction or salvation.

The heroine of our story is named Cara and even with her flawed past and emotional damage I believe she stands out as a strong female character in the story. Cara has an unnatural talent that keeps her apart from the regular world. But when a wounded animal is brought to her home, she is unwillingly sucked into the realm of angels and demons.

My favorite quote from Cara:

"It's just sex Ares."

His eyes flashed. "It's more than that, and you know it."
"No. I don't. I don't want to get attached to you any more than you want to be attached to me. But things are pretty intense all around us, and we could both use a break and a little pleasure. You asked if I'd ever been fucked and I said no. Well now I have. And I liked it. So quit being squeamish, and do it again."

If you're familiar with Ione's work, you know she's not shy with the "lovin" in her books. If Pleasure Unbound didn't set the Smexy Bar on HOT for you - Eternal Rider is going to bust through the ceiling with SCORCHING!!!!  Ione has taken things to a whole new level. H.O.T.S. (Hawt Oral Tree Sex) That's all I'm gonna say.

I also loved Ares' other siblings, Thanatos and Limos.  Than's curse is Death and even with his stiff and stoic attitude you know that there's much more there hidden underneath.  Limos' curse is Famine. Even as an immortal she's a Fashionista after my own heart -- when she's not wearing her armour or cracking ribs with her thighs (oh yeah.... there's rib cracking thigh love in here too!)

Bottom line, Eternal Rider (Lords of Deliverance Book 1) is the start of a brand new love affair for me. I can't wait for Book 2 - Immortal Rider to be released in December. Limos' story is up next. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for more snarky-kick-ass-rib-cracking-thigh-action! And ummm more H.O.T.S couldn't hurt either!

Special thanks again to the lovely ladies of KLB Virtual Events for including me in the Book Blog Tour for such a fantastic book!  Don't forget to stop by Stacy's Place tomorrow. She's next on the list for the tour! See the entire tour schedule here.

Reivew: Chosen by Jeanne C. Stein

It's been almost a year since bounty hunter Anna Strong became a vampire, but as she's about to discover, her greatest powers have yet to be unleashed...

Though Anna has become accustomed to the fact that she's now vampire, she still enjoys the illusion of being human.  So when she suddenly notices that her primitive urges are getting harder to control, she's worried.  Then she's attacked, narrowly escaping with her life.  The only person with enough motive to want her dead is her old foe-- Warren Williams.  But another, more dangerous enemy lies in wait.

What Anna doesn't know is that she's far too valuable to kill.  For she's been chosen to shape the destiny of the vampire race --and of all mankind... (summary from back cover)

Anna is still living the life of a human, but it's becoming more and more difficult to hide her vampire nature from those she works with and love.  As she struggles to control her increasing urges she is attacked by an assassin in her home.  Believing the attack is retaliation by her old foe Warren Williams, Anna begins the journey to prove once and for all the she alone is responsible for her destiny. But she learns quickly that things are not always what they seem and that those closest to her may be more dangerous that the enemy she knows.

Chosen is book 6 in the Anna Strong series by Jeanne Stein. I've been a fan of this series since book 1 and when I first started blogging and writing reviews, I was thrilled beyond measure when Jeanne Stein commented on my review of Book 5, Retribution. Check it out here. But I digress.

Readers are introduced to a whole new dimension into Anna's life as a vampire. We meet new characters and learn interesting facts about old ones. All of the questions that have been hovering unanswered in the previous books are pretty much answered in Chosen. But don't worry - a whole NEW set of questions are presented -- too keep the story going.

Stein continues to create a kick-ass character in Anna Strong and this series.  Anna evolves. She matures. She learns from her mistakes. I LOVE THAT! I'm looking forward to the next phase of Anna's life in Crossroads which releases this August.
