Review: Spiritual Seduction by Desiree Day

Summary from Back Cover

Widowed with two small children, Riley Tyson is devastated when her husband Bradley is murdered. She doesn’t miss his fiery temper and heartless philandering, though. In fact, now that he’s dead, their relationship is better than ever. Bradley’s spirit sneaks into her bedroom at night, tempting her with gentle, seductive caresses and showering her with the attention he never gave her in life. It seems too crazy to be true. Until he drags her unsuspecting soul into a world so evil even Lucifer won’t go near it. . . .

Enter Malik Davenport, Riley’s boss and longtime friend. At six foot seven, with smooth, almond-colored skin and vibrant blue eyes, Malik rarely goes unnoticed. An ancient warrior prince who specializes in slaying demons, he’s the only man who can save Riley’s life—and the only one whose passionate touch unleashes the sexy vixen inside her.

As Bradley’s ruthless spirit orchestrates a deadly power surge against the living, Malik and his team of paladins prepare for a war of the worlds that has been brewing for ages. If they win, Malik and Riley can be together forever, but if they lose, the fate of humanity hangs in the balance.

Let me start off by saying that I contacted Desiree Day and asked to review her latest book, Spiritual Seduction. I haven’t read her earlier work, but was truly interested in reading a paranormal romance novel by an African American author. Having said that, here is my review.

This book wasn’t for me. Like I stated before, I love a good paranormal story, but while reading Spiritual Seduction I realized this is more of a romance novel/erotica novel.  The paranormal part wasn't believable.

Spiritual Seduction is written in the third person. As a reader, I was able to see the thoughts and feelings of the main characters but it didn’t pull me “into” the story. The narration style  "told" the story of Riley and Malik and didn't allow me to experience it.

There were also lines like:

“That man is harder to catch than a straight man in San Francisco”

“This room looked like Aretha Franklyn was in it getting ready for an awards show before you cleaned it up”

“Hold on. I’m starting to feel like the last turkey wing at a Thanksgiving dinner"

“They all swarmed on me like I’d just lost my last penny playing the lottery.”

“Although their normal living quarters seemed as secure as a virgin’s chastity belt…”

This kind of dialogue is used by all of the main characters or used in a descriptive manner throughout the novel. I really would have liked more third person descriptive text than getting it from the characters. It made the characters less believable to me.

Day delivers with her erotica scenes. But the excessive use of certain words (rhymes with wussy and rock) were a turn off. There are certainly places in most any novel where they would fit. I was just disappointed that they were used in almost every sex scene between Riley and Malik.

The biggest issue for me was there was no world building. The reader is simply expected to believe that Demons and demon slayers existed. Period. You’re given the background of Malik’s heritage as a warrior prince, in a story he told to Riley. In my opinion, this is the weakest part of the novel. I wish more time were invested in world building more than just detailing background facts in conversations between the characters.

Fans of Day’s previous work, will probably disagree with my review.  But as I've always stressed - my reviews are my own opinion.

The lines you quoted were horrible! What the hell? Did you laugh out loud when you read them? I know I would have. Great review.
