Review: Darker Angels by M.L.N. Hanover
When Jayné Heller's uncle Eric died, she inherited a fortune beyond all her expectations -- and a dangerous mission in a world she never knew existed. Reining in demons and supernatural foes is a formidable task, but thankfully Jayné has vast resources and loyal allies to rely on. She'll need both to tackle a bodyswitching serial killer who's taken up residence in New Orleans, a city rich in voodoo lore and dark magic.
Working alongside Karen Black, a highly confident and enigmatic ex-FBI agent, Jayné races to track down the demon's next intended host. But the closer she gets, the more convinced she becomes that nothing in this beautiful, wounded city is exactly as it seems. When shocking secrets come to light, and jealousy and betrayal turn trusted friends into adversaries, Jayné will soon come face-to-face with an enemy that knows her all too well, and won't rest until it has destroyed everything she loves most.... (Summary from back cover)
Darker Angels is book two of M.L.N. Hanover's The Black Sun's Daughter series. I have to say, that after reading Unclean Spirits (Book One) I was left a bit disjointed. I enjoyed the book - but there were so many more questions than answers, it really left a bad taste in my mouth. So I wasn't in a rush to pick up book two. This past January I needed a road trip read and said what the heck - let me check in on Jayné.
*begin drumroll music now*
Let me start off with WOW!! Darker Angels was definetely a great read! The story picks up several months after Jayné's first incident with Riders. She's still getting used to her new found wealth as well as trying to identify and catalouge all of her uncle's posessions. She gets a call from someone her uncle has worked with in the past who needs help with a problem in New Orleans. The team flies in and that's when things start to fall apart. Events occur that cause Jayné to doubt everything around her - her decisions, her abilities and even her right to lead her team.
Darker Angels stands out as a fast paced, high action sequel that keeps you turning each page. Hanover's writing continues to be strong with vivid details and settings. Darker Angels is set in New Orleans and I love how it includes current day real life details showing people rebuilding their lives after Katrina.
While it took me well over a year to pick up book two in this series, but I had no such delay when I found out book 3, Vicious Grace was released last November. Check back for that reivew!
Get your read on!
