Interview and Giveaway with Author Seressia Glass

Please join me in welcoming author, Seressia Glass to Dren’s B-Spot! Seressia is the author of a new Urban Fantasy series called Shadowchasers. Her first book, Shadow Blade was released in January. You can read my review of Shadow Blade Here. Shadow Chase is book two and is scheduled for release on July 27th.

Dren: What drew you into the Urban Fantasy Genre to create Shadow Blade?
Seressia: I've loved fantasy and paranormal since I was a kid and didn't know what the genre was called. One of the first books I attempted to write back in my teens was about sisters who were guardians of a mystical realm. No that book didn't need to see the light of day, but I wouldn't mind revisiting my Daughters of the Sword characters someday!

Dren: Do you find it difficult to write Urban Fantasy with African American lead characters?
Seressia: Actually I don't! If you're going to call it urban fantasy and set it in an urban area, at some point you're going to encounter black people if you "keep it real." It makes sense to me that if I'm going to set a story in a major metropolitan area I'm going to people it with the demographics of that area. And I do know quite a few black people who follow alternate religions, so that wasn't a stretch for me either. I'm just thrilled that my editor was cool with my characters and my mythology.

Dren: Do you enjoy reading Urban Fantasy? If so, what are your favorite books? Who are your favorite Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance authors?
Seressia: This is always a hard question because I know so many fantastic writers! I loved Octavia Butler's work. I also read Patricia Briggs and Lilith Saintcrow. There are a ton of others, but if I leave someone out, I'll get in trouble!

Dren: What’s more difficult to write, Romance or Urban Fantasy?
Seressia: The neat thing about romance is that it's inclusive from the perspective that I can write in detail about the unfolding relationship between my characters and still go into detail with the world building and paranormal or suspense elements. With Urban Fantasy, the world and action takes precedence over the interpersonal relationships. When you're dodging seeker demons and bullets, it's hard to stop and think about how you feel about that hunky guy who's fighting beside you! I definitely have to train myself to write a bit differently. Good thing I'm trainable!

Dren: In previous interview’s you’ve stated that the Shadowchasers series will be a Trilogy: Shadow Blade, Shadow Chase and Shadow Fall. Will you really stop there or can we expect even more adventures with of Kira and Khefar?
Seressia: There's already an idea for book four, and I'm going to roll right into it when I'm done with Shadow Fall. It's got the working title SHADOW HUNT, and pits Kira against an old nemesis. You'll get to see more members of the supernatural community, and more on Kira and Khefar's relationships. I'd definitely like to keep writing as long as readers and my publisher are interested!

Dren: If you had to pick, which book did you enjoy writing the most Shadow Blade or Shadow Chase?
Seressia: Again with the hard questions! Both books are the same but different, and I enjoyed different aspects of both. Shadow Blade kicked off the series, so it was like the honeymoon or the start of a relationship when birds sing and flowers bloom and your muse can do no wrong. In Shadow Chase, I get to delve a bit further into the mythology of Egypt and my paranormal world, so there was a lot more research in it, which can be fun AND a time sink. In Shadow Fall, the Egyptian Book of the Dead is strongly featured, so there was even more research to do on that, including reading all of the spells in the funerary text to decide which ones fit the story.

Dren: When you’re not writing, what do you enjoy doing?
Seressia: Sleeping! Seriously though, I watch a lot of anime, I bellydance when I can, and add jewelry and crystals to my collection. Oh, and spend time with my sweetie and the fam!

Seressia, thanks so much for stopping by my blog! I’m certainly looking forward to the upcoming release of Shadow Blade and more stories of Kira and Khefar’s adventures!

Now on to the fun stuff!  Seressia has been gracious enough to provide us with a signed copy of the upcoming Shadow Chase, book two of her Shadowchaser series! As an extra bonus - I'll throw in a copy of Book One, Shadow Blade.  So you can win both books with just one entry!!
