Review: Shadow Blade by Seressia Glass
Kira's day job is as an antiquities expert, but her true calling is as a Shadowchaser. Trained from youth to be one of the most lethal Chasers in existence, Kira serves the Gilead Commission, dispatching the Fallen who sow discord and chaos. Of course, sometimes Gilead bureaucracy is as much a thorn in her side as anything the Fallen can muster against her. Right now, though, she's got a bigger problem. Someone is turning the city of Atlanta upside down in search of a millennia-old Egyptian dagger that just happens to have fallen into Kira's hands.
Then there's Khefar, the dagger's true owner -- a near-immortal 4,000-year-old Nubian warrior who, Kira has to admit, looks pretty fine for his age. Joining forces is the only way to keep the weapon safe from the sinister Shadow forces, but now Kira is in deep with someone who holds more secrets than she does, the one person who knows just how treacherous this fight is. Because every step closer to destroying the enemy is a step closer to losing herself to Shadow forever....
Author, Seressia Glass weaves a story of good versus evil in her recent urban fantasy release, Shadow Blade. We are introduced to Kira, a woman with an extraordinary touch. Through her touch, she can know the history of an item and everyone who’s touched it or she can drain the life force from any living thing. Adopted at a young age, her powers first emerged when she reached puberty. But after a devastating accident that leaves her younger sibling in a coma, her adopted parents decide to turn her over to the Gilead Commission where she is trained to be a Shadowchaser. Shadowchasers are elite assassins who hunt and destroy members of the Fallen – those who live for the sole purpose of creating chaos and destruction in the world.
Shadowchaser by night, by day Kira is an antiquities dealer. Shortly after her friend and mentor Bernie brings her a rare knife for authentication, she’s finds his torn and mutilated body in an alley. Someone wants the dagger … and is willing to kill for it. As Kira begins to search for clues to, she meets the dagger’s true owner – a 4,000-year-old Nubian warrior named Khefar. Can Kira trust her instincts as she hunts for a killer? Or will she become the next victim?
I had high hopes when I started Shadow Blade and I’m happy to say that I was not disappointed. Kira is a hard-edged assassin who likes what she does. But even though she is an assassin, she’s managed to carve a niche for herself in the normal world of antiquities where her abilities are more useful than deadly. The isolation created by her ability is evident within the limited relationships that Kira maintains. Not being able to touch someone has taken it's toll but it's a part of herself that she keeps hidden from others.
Shadow Blade has a fresh and unique angle that brings in Egyptian mythology into play in fascinating ways. Glass has done a thorough job with world building making it believable and solid. The character development between Kira, Khefar and her small network of friends is also well done.
Overall, Shadow Blade is a great start to what should be an exciting new Urban Fantasy series. Book two, Shadow Chase is scheduled to be released on July 27th. I’m looking forward to more of Kira’s adventures.
