Ramblings: A New Perspective..
This morning as I began my morning prep for heading off to work, my mind was full of about a billion things I needed to do. Finish reading Archangel’s Consort for Rex Robot’s Book Tour. Start Alien Tango by Gini Koch, read two new books that arrived the night before. AND write articles for my Examiner.com gigs – Charlotte Books Examiner and Fantasy Media Examiner. *insert sound of screeching breaks here*
Yeah – I have a side gig for writing articles for the Examiner.com. It all started earlier this year when I started receiving article notifications from my friends Jewel of Jewel’s Fab Life and Shay of Designs by Shay. They were writing articles for their respective areas – Fashion and Wedding Planning respectively, and I started thinking – “Hey! This is a great way to make money!” I love to write – and I can write about the things I love. Good deal!
Well that was about 8 months ago. To-date – I’ve earned about $5.00 (no, it’s not a typo) and about 30 gray hairs stressing over the next thing I have to write. The payout for Examiner writers is “unique” to say the least. Everyone keeps saying – the more you write, the more you post – the more you’ll get paid. So I tried that. Oh and in the midst of all this – I decide to write a book. Yeah, I’m a glutton for punishment.
So for the last 8 months, I’ve been blogging, writing a book and writing for the Examiner in addition to being a wife, a mom, an IT professional (the job that pays the bills) and an HOA Treasurer (UGH long story – don’t ask – too painful LOL). Needless to say – I’m struggling with all of the above – but mainly with my Examiner articles. I’ve been doing “just enough” to keep me active so no one can steal my tag. But man – it’s hard trying to look up stuff to write about. It should be easy – but it’s not. And this morning I realized why.
In my heart of hearts, I’m a Writer ….. not a Journalist.
The funny thing about this “revelation” is that I’ve had it before – exactly one year after I graduated college. You see – I’ve been writing since I was 9. Short stories, plays etc. I even wrote a skit for my Senior Variety Show in High School (of course it was a hit!). So I with my “kid logic” I’m thinking -- I love to write so I must study Journalism. So that was my major in college. I wrote for the school paper, landed internships with Scholastic Publishing, etc. I even landed a GREAT job with a publishing house in NY after graduation. But after one year I realized – this is not the path I want to take. I want to write a book!
Then life happened and I forgot about writing. Fast forward 20 years and boom. I’m right back at the same conclusion – Journalism is not for me. I’m a Writer. I want to Write a book – no I WANT TO WRITE BOOKS! And Dammit! I’m GOOD AT IT. Yes, there’s a lot I need to learn – but I’m willing to put in the work, time and energy to get it done because that is truly where my heart and soul live. In the Writing.
So with my newly “rediscovered” revelation – I’m letting go. I’m letting go of my Examiner spots. So if anyone in Charlotte wants that tag – go for it! I’m letting go of the stress of Book Blogging. I’m still going to read and review books – but my goal is not to be a top blogger. It’s to Review, Rant and Ramble – just like I originally planned. Then, I’m going to do what I love most – write.
So here's to me --- Getting back on track and Getting my Write on!

Good for you girl! You've got to do what you feel and like you said, you are a writer. I can't wait to read more of your story! Love the BOOM at the end btw. ;)
You got to do what's right for you. There have been times where I've felt the same way - I think we all have. I'm sure if I cut back on my twitter time, I'd get a hell of a lot more reading and reviewing done. But I can't do that. I loves my tweeps!
Wow, you have been doing so many things at once!
I envy you.. Well your energy at least!
But it's good that you let go of what you thought was taking too much of your time without any real benefits!!
Awesome. You're inspiring. I've been reading too much and neglecting my writing. I need to scale back as well!
sounds good...follow you're heart.
Always do what you love and love what you do. I hope everything falls into place for you.
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate your comments. I love blogging about books and I'll keep doing that -- but the examiner stuff was driving me nuts. Now if could only step away from BEJEWELED.....ROFL
Good for you! I've been trying to figure it all out - what do I want to do, what do I need to do... I'm proud of you for taking this step!
Awwww! Do you and I can't wait to read this book!
